KVB - Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe
Supporting the customer in implementing correct and consistent passenger information in the KVB system environment
The system structures that had evolved over the years at KVB led to inconsistent passenger information across the various output media.
As-Is Analysis
- Comprehensive analysis of KVB’s system environment
- Recording and mapping of process flows
- Presentation of information flows
- Identification of problem areas to derive areas of action
Objectives for passenger information
- Development of the target state for passenger information in collaboration with the specialist departments using verifiable operational scenarios
- Derivation of the necessary measures with regard to processes and system architecture
Fleet size:
- Approximately 382 trams on 12 lines, 236 stops, and a network of 246 kilometers
- Approximately 257 buses on 62 lines, 746 stops, and a network of 564 kilometers
Requirements planning for vehicle IT platform
Implementation of cross-departmental requirements planning within the framework of the ITCS, IT vehicle platform, and passenger information system.
Based on the identification of various needs for action in the area of vehicle on-board computers (discontinued) and passenger information, the KVB’s goal was to consider all aspects and requirements within the ITCS/passenger information framework for a technically and functionally forward-looking solution and to incorporate them into a potential implementation.
- Interviews with the departments involved in ITCS, vehicle, and passenger information based on prepared questionnaires to determine requirements
- Preparation, categorization, and rough budgeting of all requirements in an overall overview with subsequent cross-departmental prioritization
- Deriving of the fields of action and the target architecture of the ITCS/passenger information system
- Determination of a possible project structure for implementation
- Support in the application for possible funding
- Preparation of the necessary board proposal with specifications for economic planning and resource planning for the implementation of the coordinated needs analysis in the overall project “Kundenbedüfnisse@itcs.KVB” with various sub-projects
Project Kundenbedürfnisse@itcs.KVB
Project support in the implementation of the project goals and content agreed upon in the Customer Needs@itcs.KVB project.
The Customer Needs@itcs.KVB project included the following technical focuses:
- Architecture of central passenger information
- passenger information displays (DFI)
- Editorial system
- Vehicle IP network platform with Ethernet and switches
- Extension of TETRA radio to include mobile radio
- Ensuring the network requirements for landside vehicle connections
- New procurement/migration of on-board computers
- Multifunctional displays in the vehicles
- Passenger counting sensors
- Connection of various interfaces and train protection systems to the existing itcs
- Expansion of statistical functionality
Within this framework, we provided support throughout the entire project, including the following work:
- Project management
- Application for funding measures
- Procurement process including preparation of technical specifications, contractual basis, test setups, and support of the tendering process
- Implementation phase including review of specifications, quality assurance tests, commissioning, and acceptance testing
